The church of St Mary the Virgin was rebuilt in 1752, replacing a building that had existed since at least 1157. The architect was Stephen Wright, Clerk of Works at Hampton Court.
It was enlarged and made very ornate in 1857 by Samuel Sanders Teulon (1812-1873), who also built Christchurch in Croydon, Holy Trinity in Hastings and St Mary in Ealing. He also designed and built the village of Hunstanworth in County Durham plus, on a smaller scale, the Buxton Memorial Fountain in Victoria Tower Gardens near the Houses of Parliament.
The vicar of Sunbury, Walter Richardson—who died in 1602—said that the sins of his parishioners had made them '“a byword and mocking stock” to neighbouring villages. So no change there then. |
